- Summary
- The Madam C.J. Walker Photograph Collection depicts some aspects of the personal and professional lives of persons affiliated with the Walker family, from the 1900s to the 1950s. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of some of Walker's family, friends and associates; and views of her estate, Villa Lewaro, at Irvington-on-Hudson, New York. The majority of images seem to have been taken after Walker's death in 1919; Walker appears in only one image, behind the wheel of her car, with her niece and two of her workers (ca. 1915).The collection includes a wedding portrait of Mae Walker, the adopted daughter of A'Lelia Walker Robinson and granddaughter to Madam C.J. Walker (1923); a group portrait of the bridal party of Mae Walker, consisting of the matron of honor, bridesmaids and flower girls (1923); a studio portrait and a snapshot of Mrs. Sarah Everett, who was charge of housekeeping at Villa Lewaro (n.d.); a group portrait of Sara Price Patton, Walker's social secretary, with a group onboard a boat during an annual New York State Legislative outing and inspection of the Port Authority (n.d.); exterior views of Villa Lewaro (ca. 1920s); a view of anti-segregationist judge J. Waties Waring and his wife outside their Charleston, South Carolina home a few months before it was shot at (1950); a view of a party given by Miami philanthropist Kelsey Pharr for his son, Kelsey, formerly a member of the Delta Rhythm Boys, at an unidentified club (n.d.); and portraits of Atlanta doctor and drug store company president W.H. Harris, Kelsey Pharr, Sr., and educator Arenia C. Mallory.
