  • Jane Lowe (ca. 10 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Lowe discusses her interest in combining acting and dancing ; and recalls the experience of performing nude in Oh, Calcutta.
  • Darrah Carr (ca. 8 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Carr contrasts Irish step dancing and ballet ; explores connections among Irish step dancing, flamenco, and Bharata natyam ; discusses the appeal of rhythmic movement.
  • Lois Welk (ca. 10 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Welk describes how Daniel Nagrin's The Peloponnesian War provided an impetus to her dance career, by showing her the role of dance as communication. She also talks about the experience of producing The horse's mouth at Corning, N.Y., emphasizing its inclusion of different dance forms and cultures.

Rand discusses the connection between dance and meditation, which she first perceived in the choreography of Lucas Hoving, and later in Dervish whirling dances. She explores the concept of performing as a sacred and transcendental activity both for performer and viewer.
  • Cassette 2. Phyllis Lamhut (ca. 12 min.) / interviewed by Beth Soll. Lamhut traces her dance career from its beginnings in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and discusses the influence of Alwin Nikolais, with whom she studied and performed. She also discusses her lifelong interest in improvisation, choreography, and teaching ; and the financial issues she encountered upon forming her own company.
  • Joan Finkelstein (ca. 14 min.) / interviewed by Beth Soll. Finkelstein recalls her dance studies and performing career, particularly her work as student and performer with Jean Léon Destiné. She describes her current position as director of the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center, and some of the center's activities.
  • Maude Baum (ca. 13 min.) / interviewed by Beth Soll. Looking back at her experiences as teacher, performer, and director, Baum discusses the experiments in art and computer technology pioneered by her company eba (Electronic Body Arts). She also discusses the appeal of the choreography of Isadora Duncan ; her current activities ; educating audience members to be active rather than passive participants.
  • Janet Soares (ca. 12 min.) / interviewed by Beth Soll. Soares, whose early work included assisting Louis Horst at The Juilliard School, recalls the dance world in New York City during the 1960s ; and describes Dance Uptown, a concert series she founded in 1967.
  • Sukanya Rahman (ca. 10 min.) / interviewed by Beth Soll. Rahman discusses the dance tradition she inherited from her grandmother Ragini Devi (an American who married an Indian political refugee) and her mother Indrani ; her studies of painting and Graham technique ; educating audiences about traditional Indian dance.
