Summary
The Jo Mielziner Papers reflect his long and varied career as set and lighting designer, theater architect and consultant, writer and speaker. The largest portion of the collection is the production files and architectural and design projects (56 boxes). These include rough sketches, research materials, color samples, notes, contracts and correspondence. Almost every play, musical, ballet, opera, or project Mielziner worked on is represented and most can be followed from inception to finished technical drawings. The correspondence (21 boxes) documents his relationship with many notable theater people of his time including Brooks Atkinson, Lucinda Ballard, Harold Clurman, Henry Fonda, Leland Hayward, Elia Kazan, Joshua Logan, Mary Martin, Laurence Olivier, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, Rosalind Russell, Irene Selznick and Tennessee Williams. Other correspondence documents his involvement in American National Theatre and Academy, United States Institute for Theatre Technology and United Scenic Artists Local 807.
The collection also includes family correspondence, sketches by the 12 year old Mielziner, material related to his books: Designing for Theatre and The Shapes of Our Theatre, notes for his personal appearances, lists of his exhibitions, and papers related to his residences and studios.
