Summary
Bonnie Bird and Thea Nerissa Barnes, two dancers who worked with Martha Graham respectively at the beginning and ending of her career, examine both the evolutionary changes in the technique she developed and the elements that have remained consistent over the years. They particularly emphasize her concern with communication and expressivity, or what Bird describes as her search for what was the "most basic in the the expression of human feeling." Archival footage of Bird demonstrating Graham technique of the early years is juxtaposed with present-day footage of a workshop at the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance, taught by Bird and Barnes. The film concludes with a performance for the camera, based on Graham technique.
