- Librettist Smith wrote that the plot was suggested by Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, which was incorporated into the secont act finale. The composer De Koven and librettist Smith attended public school together in Chicago and were also known for writing the musicals Robin Hood and Rob Roy.

- The operetta was performed at New York City's Abbey's Theatre May 16-June 15(?), 1895, and later toured cities in the United States, including Princeton, N.J., New Haven, Conn., Boston, Mass., Ithaca, N.Y., Pittsburgh, Penn., and Chicago, Ill. from Sept. 1895 to Jan. 1896. This is one of Russell's few appearances in an American operetta before 1900.
