  1. Originally issued in 25 parts, 1862-1873; volume title pages were issued with last part and are all dated 1873. Parts title pages are normally canceled in complete copies.
  2. Illustrations: 367 full-page hand-colored lithographs. Chiefly sketched by John Gould from specimens and drawn and lithographed by H.C. Richter; a few are by Joseph Wolf and Richter. Hand-colored by or under the supervision of W.M. Hart; lithographed by Walter and by Walter & Cohn.
  3. Each plate accompanied by leaf with 2 pages of descriptive letterpress. Plates are numbered only in plate lists in each volume.
  4. Volume 1 contains also title page, dedication, list of subscribers, preface, introduction, and list of plates ([12], cxl, [2] pages); volumes 2-5 contain also title page and list of plates.
