  1. Originally issued in 22 parts, 1832-1837; volume title pages were issued with last part and are all dated 1837. Parts title pages are normally canceled in complete copies.
  2. Illustrations: 448 full-page hand-colored lithographs. Chiefly sketched by John Gould from specimens and drawn and lithographed by Elizabeth Gould; 67 of the bird images and many of the foregrounds were drawn and lithographed by Edward Lear. Variously signed: "Drawn from life & on stone by J. & E. Gould," "Drawn from nature & on stone by J. & E. Gould," "E. Lear del. et lithog.," "E. Lear del.," "Drawn from life & on stone by E. Lear." Printed by C. Hullmandel and hand colored under the direction of Gabriel Bayfield.
  3. Each plate accompanied by leaf with descriptive letterpress. Plates are numbered only in "General list of plates" in v. 1 and in plate lists in each volume; numbering given as 1-449, but in fact the two species called for on plates 447-448 are combined on a single plate.
  4. Volume 1 contains also title page, dedication, preface, introduction, list of subscribers, and lists of plates; volumes 2-5 contain also title page and list of plates.
  5. Volume 1: xii, [2], 4 pages, [101] leaves : 50 illustrations; v. 2: [200] leaves : 99 illustrations; v. 3: [188] leaves : 93 illustrations; v. 4: [208] leaves : 103 illustrations; v. 5: [208] leaves : 103 illustrations.
