- Originally issued in 22 parts, 1832-1837; volume title pages were issued with last part and are all dated 1837. Parts title pages are normally canceled in complete copies.
- Illustrations: 448 full-page hand-colored lithographs. Chiefly sketched by John Gould from specimens and drawn and lithographed by Elizabeth Gould; 67 of the bird images and many of the foregrounds were drawn and lithographed by Edward Lear. Variously signed: "Drawn from life & on stone by J. & E. Gould," "Drawn from nature & on stone by J. & E. Gould," "E. Lear del. et lithog.," "E. Lear del.," "Drawn from life & on stone by E. Lear." Printed by C. Hullmandel and hand colored under the direction of Gabriel Bayfield.
- Each plate accompanied by leaf with descriptive letterpress. Plates are numbered only in "General list of plates" in v. 1 and in plate lists in each volume; numbering given as 1-449, but in fact the two species called for on plates 447-448 are combined on a single plate.
- Volume 1 contains also title page, dedication, preface, introduction, list of subscribers, and lists of plates; volumes 2-5 contain also title page and list of plates.
- Volume 1: xii, [2], 4 pages, [101] leaves : 50 illustrations; v. 2: [200] leaves : 99 illustrations; v. 3: [188] leaves : 93 illustrations; v. 4: [208] leaves : 103 illustrations; v. 5: [208] leaves : 103 illustrations.
