Summary
  • Opens with introductory remarks by series producer Alan J. Pally.
  • Actress Kim Hunter recounts the circumstances surrounding the original 1947 Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' A streetcar named Desire, for which she created the role of Stella, from her audition and the rehearsal process through the play's long run, focusing on the relationships between the actors, including Marlon Brando and Jessica Tandy, director Elia Kazan, designer Jo Mielziner, and others from the production staff; she also describes some of the differences between the stage production and the 1951 film version, in which she reprised her role opposite Mr. Brando and Vivian Leigh. Ms. Hunter then reads from the correspondence of Tennessee Williams, primarily his letters to the critic Brooks Atkinson, largely concerning the critical reception accorded his plays A streetcar named desire, Camino Real, Cat on a hot tin roof, and Sweet bird of youth. Ms. Hunter concludes the program by fielding questions from the audience.
