Contents
Mary Anthony discusses her belief in dance as a way of life ; the enduring nature of art ; the ephemerality of dance. The ensuing discussion, which contains some repetition, centers on her childhood in Newport, Kentucky: her early interest in dance, and first experiences as a performer and choreographer ; her first view of Martha Graham's dancing ; her ethnic and religious background ; and the unhappy family situation that led her to run away from home at age 16. She then recalls her dance studies at Grinnell College ; auditioning for Hanya Holm in New York ; joining New Dance Group as performer and teacher ; dancing in The stovepipe hat, choreographed by Tamiris ; the formative influence of Louise Kloepper, a teacher in Holm's school ; performing with John Cage ; her ballet studies with Julia Barashkova ; dancing in Touch and go, also choreographed by Tamiris ; working in England and Italy ; dancing in Holm's Namesake, and Orestes and the Furies ; her performing partnership with Joe Gifford ; Gifford's choreography, including The pursued ; choreographing at the Holm studio ; her decision to open her own studio ; the importance of finding truth in movement ; teaching at Bennington ; the genesis of Threnody ; her first dance company.
