Summary

1. Former New York City Ballet dancer Ellen Shire discusses her childhood and family background; her early interest in ballet; and her experiences and teachers at the School of American Ballet. She describes meeting George Balanchine; being asked to join the company; the strain of her first season with the company; developing doubts about the role of ballet in her life. She recalls her difficult relationship with Jerome Robbins; working in the studio with George Balanchine; and finally leaving New York City Ballet. She describes her favorite ballets as a dancer; shares her thoughts on the current New York City Ballet; discusses her work first as a children's book author and then as a painter; the dancers who inspired her; and the prevalence of eating disorders among dancers.
