Description
  1. 1 videocassette (VHS) (112 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
  1. Four separate interviews, one each with André Bishop and Jules Feiffer, and two with Al Hirschfeld (ca. 28 min. each)
  2. André Bishop talks about his career at Playwrights Horizons from volunteer to literary manager to Artistic Dirctor, the organization's mission as a home for new playwrights to have their work produced, his feelings about reading and judging a play, how a production makes a great difference, his move to Lincoln Center Theater and his plans for that organization.
  3. Jules Feiffer talks about being a cartoonist, both successful and political, his first play, Little murders, initially a flop but revived successfully at American Place Theatre by director Alan Arkin, the failure of his next play God blues, his play Carnal knowledge and his screen adaptation of it for director Mike Nichols, the ease of writing for regional theater with little financial and critical pressure, and the successful productions of Carnal knowledge in regional theaters.
  4. Al Hirschfeld tells how he began doing theater drawings for the New York Times, how he uses "pure line" and tries for likeness and a sense of the play, and his drawings of the musical Guys and dolls, comparing the original 1950 production with the 1992 revival. Includes Mr. Hirschfeld's drawings of Arsenic and old lace, Rhinoceros, Great white hope, Nicholas Nickleby, Fences, The Barretts of Wimpole Street, The glass menagerie, A streetcar named Desire, Death of a salesman, Oklahoma, and the Ziegfeld follies. Mr. Hirschfeld also discusses his wife Dolly Haas, the history of "Nina" in his drawings, comments on other drawings which he shows, and the influenced of Eastern art on his work.
