- Prologue by the author of the Middle French prose version, leaf a2r, begins: "Comiença el prologo del trasladador deste presente libro intitulato El pelegrinage de vida humana ... Por obedeçer ala demanda dela muy alta & muy exçelente prinçesa Juana de Labal ... Yo su humill seruidor & subiecto indigno de ser aqui no[m]brado ... tome pena atrasladar el presente libro de metro en prosa ... ([El] co[m]ponedor ... fue vn muy notable [r]eligioso & letrado muy profundo llamado fray Guillelmo de Guilleuila ..."
- Table following prologue begins: "Comiença la tabla deste presente libro intitulado Pelegrinage humano ..."
- Translated into Spanish from a Middle French prose version of the original Middle French poem by Guillaume de Deguileville. The author of the prose version identifies himself (in the French original) only as a "tres humble clerc ... demourant a Angier." The prose version was composed in 1465 at the request of Jeanne de Laval (consort of René I, King of Naples and Jerusalem), and first published in 1485 by Mathias Huss, Lyon; it was formerly wrongly attributed to Jean Gallopez, author of a prose version of Guillaume de Deguileville's Pèlerinage de l'âme.
- The Spanish translator, Vicente de Mazuelo, is probably the same person as Vicente de Burgos, the translator into Spanish of Bartholomaeus Anglicus' De proprietatibus rerum (Libro de propietatibus rerum, 1494), also published at Toulouse by Henricus Mayer. See Arnaud, Elise. "El pelegrino de la vida humana publié à Toulouse à la fin du XVe siècle," in Atalaya, v. 13, 2013; Lacarra, María Jesús. "El libro de las propiedades de las cosas de Bartolomé Ánglico," in Texto, edición y público lector en los albores de la imprenta, edición digital, 2014, pages 2-3.
- Guillaume's poem in known in two recensions, the first from 1330-1331, the second, an extensive revision by the poet, from 1355. This prose version is based on the first recension.
- Imprint information from colophon, which reads: Fenesçe el quarto libro & vltimo del Pelegrinaje humano trasladado de françes en castellano por el [r]euerendo padre presentado Fray Vinçente de Maçuelo a ynstançia del honorable señor maestre Hen[r]ico Aleman, que con grand diligençia lo hizo imprimir enla villa de Tholosa enel año del Señor de mill & quatroçientos & lxxxx.
- Place of publication was formerly interpreted as Tolosa, Spain; see Silvestre, L.C. Marques typographiques, page 686, no. 1188.
- Signatures: a-n⁸.
- Gothic type; 36 lines. Without catchwords, foliation, headlines and initials. "R perruna" used initially and occasionally medially to represent "r" (transcribed here as "[r]"; some sources transcribe as "rr"); used also medially to represent "rr."
- Illustrations: 45 woodcuts, comprising 2 large, 4 half-page and 39 small cuts (including 1 repeat); on leaves a1, a3, a6-7, b1-6, c1-2, c5, c8, d2, d5, d7, e3, e5, e8, f5, g1, g3, g6, h1, h6, i2, i4-5, k5, l1-2, l4-5, l7, m2-4, m7r-v, n1-2, n4, n6-7. "The cuts are Franco-Spanish in style and are probably the work of a local artist, possibly the artist or woodcutter who illustrated Alfonso de la Torre's Vision delectable, Toulouse, 1489. At least two are rather crude copies in reverse of cuts in the Lyon, 1485 and 1489 editions of Le pèlerinage de vie humaine"--New York Public Library. Spencer Collection. Dictionary catalog and shelf list of the Spencer Collection of illustrated books and manuscripts and fine bindings, 1971, v. 1, page 778. See also Claudin, A. Histoire de l'imprimerie en France au XVe et au XVIe siècle, v. 3, pages 271 and 316.
- Printer's mark (for a variant, see: Silvestre, L.C. Marques typographiques, no. 1188) on leaf n8v, below colophon. Initial indicators and initial spaces, some with guide letters.
