- Summary
- Former New York City Ballet dancer Robert Maiorano discusses becoming involved in ballet, joining the New York City Ballet, and the experience of going on New York City Ballet's first Russian tour. He describes performing George Balanchine's Liebeslieder Walzer in Germany and his first impressions of Balanchine when he auditioned for the School of American Ballet. He discusses Balanchine's work with children, recalls his own first starring role, and describes working with Jerome Robbins and his appreciation of Robbins' Dances at a gathering. He discusses the dancer/choreographer relationship in general and Suzanne Farrell and Balanchine in particular; describes his love of dancing Frederick Ashton's Illuminations; shares some general thoughts on performance, and his reverence for John Taras; and compares current dancers to those that performed during his time. In conclusion, Maiorano discusses the current direction of the New York City Ballet under the leadership of Peter Martins.
