- Summary
- Former New York City Ballet dancers Marlene Mesavage (DeSavino) and Joysanne Sidimus are interviewed together. DeSavino discusses her early dance training; Sidimus offers a brief overview of her ballet career and the experience of being a child dancer with New York City Ballet. Sidimus and DeSavino discuss and praise their School of American Ballet teachers and George Balanchine's technique classes. DeSavino discusses sharing an apartment at age 14; Sidimus discusses her training before SAB. DeSavino identifies the qualities Balanchine sought in prospective company members. Sidimus and DeSavino recall their first impressions of Balanchine. Sidimus gives her impressions of Lincoln Kirstein and describes Peter Martin's New York debut in Apollo. Sidimus then discusses Balanchine's ability to highlight dancers' unique movement qualities in his ballets and his unpossessive attitude toward his ballets. DeSavino and Sidimus discuss their favorite ballets and reminisce about various company members, including John Taras, Vida Brown, Maria Tallchief, Melissa Hayden, Francisco Moncion and Diana Adams. In closing, Sidimus and DeSavino discuss their current activities.
