  • Cassette 1. Begins on Jan. 6, 1998. Eiko and Koma (Eiko Otake Yamada and Takashi Koma Yamada) describe their families; their education; meeting each other at the studio of Tatsumi Hijikata; studying with Kazuo Ohno; their interest in Mary Wigman; traveling to Europe; studying with Manja Chmiel; performing their own work; performers that they met in Europe, including Pina Bausch, Kurt Jooss and Lucas Hoving; Eiko's ankle injury; returning to Japan; going to New York for the first time and becoming re-inspired in their work. Interview pauses and resumes on Jauary 8, 1998. Eiko and Koma discuss the choices they have made in the subject matter of their work; the role of nature in their work; living in the Catskills for two years.
