Summary
In a wide-ranging interview, Agnes de Mille and Bill Moyers discuss topics relating to old age, religion, politics, gender differences, and death, as well as dance, theater, and de Mille's professional and private life. Among the latter group of subjects are de Mille's grandfather, the social reformer Henry George; the proscription of dancing by the Christian church; religious content in dance, as exemplified by Martha Graham's Primitive mysteries; the appeal of dancing to women; the special moments of unity between performer and audience; and dancing on pointe. At several points in the discussion de Mille recalls her early career as a dancer: her late start, her father's opposition, and her struggles against the sexism of theater managers. Extended discussions cover her ballets Rodeo and Fall River legend, and her choreography for the musicals Oklahoma! and Bloomer girl; more briefly mentioned are Brigadoon and The other. She also talks about her marriage, motherhood, the stroke that she suffered in 1975, and her triumphal return to the stage two years later.
