Summary
  • The Etta Moten Barnett Collection consists of 106 audio recordings (1955-1974), the bulk of which are the radio program I Remember When broadcast out of Chicago from 1955-1960. Etta Moten Barnett interviews prominent personalities such as Harry Belafonte, Helen Hayes, Martin Luther King in Ghana, Sammy Davis, and others. Tributes to and profiles of other composers, actors, singers and poets are also featured. Etta Moten also describes through several shows the development of her acting/singing career along with her travels and experiences throughout Africa. Other miscellaneous shows include Etta Moten's informal commentaries on holidays, events in Chicago and various reminiscences.
  • The collection also includes interviews conducted outside the United States by Claude and Etta Moten Barnett with such foreign politicians as Norman Manley and Pierre Louis and Louis Déjoie of Haiti. Recordings of panel discussions concerning race relations in South Africa, the World Council of Churches with Alan Paton and the International Cooperation Administration for African Countries are also featured.
