Playwright and director, specializing in jazz musicals which he terms "jazzicals." Black was educated at Brockport State College, Department of Drama, and Southern Illinois University Graduate School of Playwriting. He was a member of the Frank Silvera Writers Workshop, the Negro Ensemble Company, and the Writers Workshop in New York City, and was described by Lionel Mitchell, former drama critic of the New York Amsterdam News, as "the most exciting new playwright" of the 1982 season. Honors and awards include Best Play Award, Ajabu Children's Theatre, Chicago, 1977; Honorable Mention, American Song Festival, 1975; Long Play Honorable Mention Award, Southern Illinois University, 1978; Best Short Play Award, Southern Illinois University, 1978; Honorable Mention, American Song Festival, 1979; Faculty Grant, Riverdale County Day School, for screenwriting, 1981; and AUDELCO (Audience Development Committee) award, 1982.
