- Biography
- Painter Beauford Delaney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1901. During the 1920s he studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School, the South Boston School of Art, and the Copley Society in Boston. He also studied under Thomas Hart Benton, John Sloan and Don Freeman. In 1929, Delaney moved to New York City where his work was exhibited and he established his reputation as an abstract expressionist painter during the 1930s and 1940s. He moved to Paris, in 1953, where his work was often exhibited, as well as exhibitions in Germany, Italy and the United States, throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1961, Delaney suffered a nervous breakdown, from which he recovered and continued to paint, during the 1960s, in a more abstract style. In 1975, he was confined to a mental hospital until his death, in Paris, in 1979.
