Note
  • The source of the High Church rallying cry of "The Church in danger" ; answered by several whig pamphlets -- Preface of 1711 reprint attributes it to Jas. Drake "in concert with Mr. Poley", M.P. for Ipswich; in 1706 Wm Pittis was pilloried for writing it & the book was burnt; the printer, David Edwards, implicated 2 other MPs, Sir H. Mackworth & Mr. Ward (probably either John, d. 1755 or John, 1670-1749); although dated 1705, it may have been issued in 1704. -- cf. DNB (sv Pittis, Drake); Rothschild 1559; Pol. state of GB, April 1711, p. 383; Morgan G379; H&L; Goldsmiths 4244.
