Note
  • The first English translation of Voltaire's collected works, originally published in 36 v., London, 1761-1769 (vols. 37-38 were added in 1774). The 2nd edition, with explicit edition statement as above, probably comprises the 26 v. of the Prose works only, 1762-1769; cf. Evans, p. 25-28.
  • On t.p., the volume no. follows the statement of responsibility (v. 1-2) or the edition statement (v. 3-5).
  • "Smollett does not seem to have had any part in the translation, and Francklin's only contribution seems to have been the Orestes"--Evans. In a letter of May 8, 1763, Smollett described his contribution as "a small part ... including all the notes historical and critical," but he most likely annotated the Prose works only. Cf. Joliat, E. Smollett, editor of Voltaire (Modern language notes 54 (1939): 429-436); Chilton, L.A. Tobias Smollett: a case study (In The Oxford history of literary translation in English, v. 3, p. 105-110 ). "[Smollett's] specific contributions to the translation, save for lightly editing his Micromégas, are not definitively established"--Chilton, p. 106.
  • Vols. 1-2 dated 1762; v. 3-4, 1763; v. 5, 1766. Original ed. of v. 1-5 was dated 1761.
  • Vol. 1: xii, 300 p.; v. 2: [4], 308 p.; v. 3: [4], 308 p.; v. 4: viii, 303, [1] p.; v. 5: [4], 288 p.
