Summary
Discussion of the first production, in 1946, of the musical Brigadoon, by its first director, Robert Lewis; singer David Brooks, who played the role of Tommy Albright; dancer Helen Gallagher; and dancer Gemze de Lappe, a longtime associate of the musical's choreographer, Agnes de Mille. Topics include the cultural milieu in 1946, the vision of the musical's creators (particularly playwright Alan Jay Lerner), sound projection, and the emphasis on dramatic characterization that pervaded the choreography as well as the music and book. The discussion frequently refers to the 1996 revival by New York City Opera, conducted by McGlinn, for which De Lappe reconstructed de Mille's choreography.
