Local Note
Pforzheimer copy 1: Original blue-gray boards, drab paper spine, inked title, uncut, in blue cloth folder, in blue slip-case with title in gilt on spine and CHPL device in gilt. -- J.J. Leighton, Aug. 1926.
Pforzheimer copy 2: Old full polished calf, rebacked, blind-tooled decorations, red morocco spine label, gilt rules & letters: WOLLISTONECRAFT [sic]/RIGHTS/OF/WOMAN. -- Hodgson's 2/24/1956, lot 421, through Quaritch.
Pforzheimer copy 3: b7-8 misfolded, therefore mispaginated. -- Original blue-grey boards, tan back-strip mostly missing, upper board mostly detached, front free-endpaper missing, uncut, in white envelope. -- No provenance given.
Pforzheimer copy 4: This is one item from a group of Shelley forgeries created, perhaps in Paris, in the 1920's. They were acquired by a firm of antiquarian booksellers who deliberately kept them off the market and presented them to the Pforzheimer Collection. -- With the forged signature of Percy Bysshe Shelley on title page. -- Marginal annotations throughout, in pencil and in ink, which mostly underline certain passages; it is unclear if some or all of these annotations have also been forged. -- Contemporary calf, blind-tooled decorations in the Cambridge style, black morocco spine label, gilt rules & letters: VINDICATION/ OF THE RIGHTS /OF WOMAN: /WOLLSTONECRAFT; housed within a green morocco slip case made by Zaehnsdorf. -- With the armorial bookplate of John Hogg, Lincolns Inn. -- Gift of Hamill & Barker, December 22, 1987.
