Summary
Following the keynote address by Herbert Muschamp, in which he pays tribute to Edwin Denby and Arlene Croce, four young dance critics read examples of their writing. Thomas DeFrantz's "Booty control" is a critique of works by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, including Body moves and Shelter. Roslyn Sulcas reads a review of Limb's theorem, choreographed by William Forsythe. The excerpts provided by Anne Tobias, read by Herbert Scher, discuss Susan Marshall's Interior with seven figures and Walter's finest hours, George Balanchine's Variations pour une porte et un soupir, and Pilar Rioja. Rick Whitaker's examples cover Mark Morris's Rondo, Lucky charms, and Jesu, meine Freude; Elizabeth Streb's Little ease, Wall, Rise, and Up; and Neil Greenberg's The disco project. The program concludes with a question-and-answer session in which the audience participates.
Recording made possible by the cooperation of the Committee for the Dance Collection, Dance Ink, and the Jerome Robbins Archive for the Recorded Moving Image of the Dance Collection of The New York Public Library.
