Summary

Lecture-demonstration on Spanish court dance in the 17th and 18th centuries. Among the topics discussed are: Juan de Esquivel Navarro's dance manual Discursos sobre el arte del dançado, the relationship of dance and the aesthetics of the Spanish upper class, the characteristics of the Spanish school of fencing and its relationship to dance, the introduction and adaptation of French style in Spanish dance and music, and the evolution of the bolero from a folk to a classical dance. Due to a power failure in the auditorium at the end of the program, La macarena (an addition to the program) is danced without musical accompaniment except castanets.
