- Summary
- Documentary on the German modern dancer, choreographer, and teacher Mary Wigman. Filmed during her later years, Mary Wigman, speaking in German (with voiceover English narration), discusses her teacher Rudolf von Laban and his influence on her ideas, her use of masks, the choric principle utilized in her group works, her first U.S. concert in 1930, teaching concepts, hands, integration of music and dance, percussion accompaniment, turning, and her decision in 1942 to retire as a solo dancer. Filmed dance excerpts include Rudolf von Laban and students performing, Mary Wigman in her 1926 solo, Witch dance (Hexentanz, from Visionen), several choral dances, Wigman in Seraphic song, Pastoral, and Dance of summer from the solo dance cycle Shifting landscape (Schwingende Landschaft) performed in her 1930 New York debut, and Wigman's last solo appearance in Farewell and Thanksgiving (Abschied und Dank, 1942).
