Title
Penn Central Transportation Company records, 1796-1986, bulk (1835-1974).
Summary
Collection consists of records relating to the operations mainly in New York State of the New York Central Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad. Collection contains records, 1796-1969, of the New York Central (Buffalo East Lines) and the Pennsylvania Railroad (New York Zone) (chiefly files of the subsidiary Long Island Railroad which was absorbed in 1900).
Bulk of the records of the New York Central covers the period roughly from the 1840s through the 1930s and contains the files of the parent company and its historic antecedents including the pioneering Central Line railroads of the Mohawk Valley; the Hudson River Railroad; the Harlem Railroad (later the New York and Harlem Railroad) and over one hundred and fifty leased and subsidiary companies. These files include presidential, administrative and operational correspondence, executive minutes, annual reports, legal papers and accounting records. Bulk of the Long Island Railroad records consists of corporate records, 1835-1968, of railroad companies in Brooklyn and Queens, and North and South Shore lines which merged with the central line during the nineteenth century. Records of the parent Pennsylvania Railroad consist of correspondence and papers of the Real Estate Department dealing with the Pennsylvania Station in New York City; files of the Legal Department relating to the New York Zone, principally to the Long Island Railroad; and files of the Supervisor of Motive Power Expenditure; the Pennsylvania Tunnel and Terminal Railroad sub-systems; the Pennsylvania Terminal Real Estate Company; the New York Connecting Railroad; and the Stuyvesant Real Estate Company.
