5. The preface is a biographical memoir of Porson, who is erroneously identified as the author. In truth, Southey wrote the first three stanzas, and the stanza on the "Cold-Bath-Prison"; the rest was written by Coleridge (cf. Coleridge letter to H. W. Montagu, April 1830 [#1686 in Griggs]).
6. First published in the Morning Post, 6 Sep 1799, under the title "The Devil's Thoughts."
