• The preface is a biographical memoir of Porson, who is erroneously identified as the author. In truth, Southey wrote the first three stanzas, and the stanza on the "Cold-Bath-Prison"; the rest was written by Coleridge (cf. Coleridge letter to H. W. Montagu, April 1830 [#1686 in Griggs]).
• First published in the Morning Post, 6 Sep 1799, under the title "The Devil's Thoughts."
• Illustrations: 6 wood engravings, including: -- "From his brimstone bed at break of day," p. [ii], depicting the Devil, seated and reading the newspaper, getting a haircut from a demon. -- "And backwards and forwards he switch'd his long tail, As a gentleman switches his cane," p. [13], depicting the Devil walking toward London, dressed like a gentleman. -- "He saw a Lawyer killing a viper, On a dunghill beside his own stable," p. [20], depicting the Devil watching a skeleton dressed as an apothecary and riding a horse. -- "As he passed by Cold Bath Fields, he saw A solitary cell.--", p. [25], depicting the Devil inside a jail cell with two suffering prisoners. -- "He saw a certain Minister -- (a Minister to his mind) Go into a certain house -- with a majority behind," p. [30], depicting the Devil watching the Prime Minister enter the House of Lords; the King and nobles watch from an adjoining room.
