Summary
In an interview recorded on the occasion of his first and only teaching engagement in the U.S., at the University of California, Santa Barbara, choreographer Kurt Jooss discusses the influence of his teacher Rudolf von Laban, whose own ideas were still evolving at the time of Jooss's association with him. He compares Laban's more cerebral approach to dance to the instinctual approach of another groundbreaker, Isadora Duncan. The icosahedron, one of the geometric structures used in Laban's theory of space harmony, is cited as an example of Laban's analytical thinking. Jooss also discusses the question of appropriate subject matter for dance, and the current trend towards story ballets and dramatic dances. He describes his vision of the future of dance, and his concept of dance through history as a continuing stream constantly fed by new innovations.
