- Note
- The Romaunt of the Rose is a Middle English version/translation of the Roman de la Rose, consisting of three fragments, the first of which, and sometimes the third, are ascribed to Chaucer.
- The Old French poem Roman de la Rose was begun by Guillaume de Lorris (verses 1-4058) and later completed by Jean de Meun.
- Sutherland's text of the Roman de la Rose is a composite of readings from whichever manuscripts most closely parallel the Middle English text of the Romaunt of the Rose. Only the text of the three sections of the Roman corresponding to the three extant fragments of the Romaunt are included.
