Summary
Documentary on the Ballets Suédois, drawing upon materials gathered for an exhibition produced by the Dansmuseet of Sweden and presented in Paris in 1994. Much of the company's history is told from the viewpoint of a former dancer, Greta Lundberg, as she revisits sites significant to the company's seasons in Paris, notably the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Carina Ari's apartment. Erik Näslund and Bengt Häger, respectively the present and past directors of the Dansmuseet; Martine Kahane, director of the Musée de l'Opéra in Paris; and former dancer Thora Dardel Hamilton join Lundberg in recalling the company's luminaries: choreographer and leading dancer Jean Börlin, founder-director Rolf de Maré, ballerina Carina Ari, collaborators Nils Dardel, Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, and others. They examine the company's impact on modern art and pop culture, and its contributions to experimental art of the time. Designs, photos, and musical excerpts represent the ballets Nuit de Saint-Jean (also seen in archival footage), L'homme et son désir, Maison de fous, Les mariés de la Tour Eiffel (also seen in a recreation by Gigi Catuliano), Iberia, Skating-rink, Les vierges folles, Within the quota, La création du monde, and Relâche, the last including René Clair's film Entr'acte.
