- On October 12 1817, Lord Byron wrote to John Murray, "I have since written a poem ... humourous, in or after the excellent manner of Mr. Whistlecraft (whom I take to be Frere) ..." He elaborated in another letter to Murray on the 23rd: "Mr. Whistlecraft has no greater admirer than myself -- I have written a story ... in imitation of him -- called Beppo ..."Pforzheimer copy 1: Bound with "Cantos III. and IV" (London: J.
