As the model is dressed in the many layers of the traditional Japanese junihitoe, Ms. Kondo presents a history of the costume, which originated in the Heian period (794-1185). She describes the costume's components, the art of layering colors harmoniously, and the lifestyle of the Heian women of the court who wore the kimonos.
