Ms. Wynn discusses her childhood in Chambersburg, Penn.; segregation; learning to sew from her grandmother; moving to New York City; working at her uncle's tailor shop in White Plains, N.Y.; opening her first dressmaking business; Ella Fitzgerald; Josephine Baker; Marian Anderson; the War Against Poverty; Arthur Mitchell; the Rev. Adam Clayton Powell; the Dance Theatre of Harlem and its tour to Spoleto; experiencing racism; costuming Mr. Mitchell's Holberg suite; the process of working with choreographers and building costumes from sketches; George Balanchine's Bugaku; teaching dance students to sew; Bill Blass; open houses at Dance Theatre of Harlem; Pamela Allen; Fashion Designers of America; dying tights to match dancers' skin tones; pointe shoe maintenance; fundraising for the Dance Theatre of Harlem; performing in Giselle; and Frederic Franklin.
