Summary
Panel discussion on the making of the videotape From silence to sound: synchronizing original music to master silent films; George Balanchine's choreography, La valse and La source. Robert Gottlieb describes how he and dance critic Arlene Croce originated the project, for which Madeleine Nichols of the Dance Collection served as project director and Ron Honsa as producer and director. Edward Villella, who danced in La source on the tape, discusses how archival recordings aid in restagings of ballets, especially where many versions of the choreography exist. Nichols describes how pianist Dianne Chilgren synchronized her playing of the score with the visual image, and Honsa talks about technical aspects of transferring film to videotape and recording the score. The recording From silence to sound is screened in full, in addition to a silent version of the excerpts from La valse and a brief tape of Chilgren and Violette Verdy working in the recording studio. In the closing question-and-answer session, issues of rights, piracy, and preservation of films and videos are discussed by the audience and the panelists.
