- Cassette 1 (10 min.). Recorded January 24, 1984. Ms. Shurr discusses first meeting Graham at Denishawn studio; taking class in 1925 at John Murray Anderson's studio; Graham being forced to discover her own technique through teaching; Graham's early years with Louis Horst; Graham's teaching and early studios; her approval of de Mille writing the biography of Graham. (Side 2 blank)

Ms. Shurr discusses classes at Denishawn; classes with Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman; first classes with Graham; Graham being forced to develop her own technique because she couldn't afford Denishawn copyright fees; leaving the Denishawn studio for Doris Humphrey's company; leaving Humphrey for Graham; impoverished living conditions in the early years; Mrs. Edith Isaacs' role in tempering Graham's outbursts.
