Summary
Viewing Filippo Taglioni's La sylphide as a radical achievement in its time, dancer Frank Augustyn and others explore its thematic and choreographic innovations. They discuss how it expresses Romantic preoccupations such as rebellion against convention and the fascination with the otherworldly. The female dancers describe their own experiences of dancing on pointe as they examine how ballet uses pointe technique to add to the theatrical illusion. August Bournonville's version of the ballet, long preserved by the Royal Danish Ballet, is compared to Taglioni's, particularly in the prominence it gives to the male dancer. The technical qualities of muscle memory and ballon are described and demonstrated. The discussion is illustrated by performance excerpts from Pierre Lacotte's reconstruction of Taglioni's choreography, and excerpts of Bujones and others dancing Bournonville's choreography.
