Description
  1. 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequence; 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. Dancer Frank Augustyn and others discuss the 19th-century Romantic ballet Giselle as an example of the importance of dramatic characterization in ballet. Drawing upon their own experiences of dancing the roles of Giselle or Albrecht, the interviewees explore different interpretations of these roles, pointing out how their human qualities help surmount the unrealistic scenario and establish emotional ties with the audience. Other topics include the technical demands on the dancer, the musical score by Adolphe Adam, and the qualities that make the ballet the epitome of the Romantic era. Performance excerpts (choreography by Leonid Lavrovski after Coralli and Perrot, staged by Yuri Grigorovich) illustrate the points in question.
