- Summary
- Sketches of animals and birds, most grouped on a page by type or species of animal. Sketches on one page may have been made on different dates. Animals and birds include: ducks, geese, turkeys, pheasants, cormorants, heron, pigeons, turkeys and other birds; deer, elk, gazelles, bears, goats, water buffalo, camels, a kangaroo and frogs.

- Title from spine of wrappers.
- Binding: Original quarter brown leather and dark green paper boards. Subsequently laid in burgundy leather wrappers and slipcase.
- Leaves numbered by hand in upper right corner of each leaf; 50 leaves, lacking 15, 36, 44.
- Drawings in pencil, pen and ink, some with wash or watercolor. Some drawings have captions in French or in German and some have scientific names (in Latin) of the animals pictured.
- Some of the drawings were used in the 1870s as the basis for etchings.
- Bookplate of Samuel Putnam Avery on inside front cover.
- Many of the drawings are dated with month, day and year. Some drawings are signed or initialed by Bodmer.
