- Summary
- In a discussion of the inspiration and influence of horror films, five theater artists talk about both specific films and common characteristics of the genre, noting ways in which they have adapted horrific elements for use in their own works. The discussion is illustrated by video excerpts of various works, including Janie Geiser's film noir puppet play; John Kelly's Diary of a somnambulist, inspired by the film The cabinet of Dr. Caligari; and Sally Silvers' dance piece Grand Guignol. The panelists also compare masculine and feminine responses to and roles in horror films; describe how physical scale and atmosphere can enhance horrific effects in various performing spaces; and discuss the expression of socio-political messages through horror. A question-and-answer period follows the discussion.
