Items numbered on mounts. Some blind stamped Edwin Levick, New York and have numbers in negative. 33 images are by Levick, the rest by unidentified photographer(s).

  • William Williams (1862-1947) was Commissioner of Immigration at Ellis Island, 1902-1905, 1909-1913. Other materials from the estate of Williams, including scrapbooks with photographs that duplicate or supplement this collection are located in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division of NYPL.

Summary
Views of buildings and grounds, including debris strewn areas and gardens, and interior views including the Great Hall, dining room and other areas at Ellis Island. Images of immigrants include groups waiting to be processed, women and children eating at long tables and portraits of groups in ethnic garb, including a group of gypsies. The collection also includes views of New York harbor and skyline, and ferries used to transport the immigrants.

Biography
William Williams (1862-1947) was Commissioner of Immigration at Ellis Island, 1902-1905, 1909-1913. Other materials from the estate of Williams, including scrapbooks with photographs that duplicate or supplement this collection are located in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division of NYPL.
