Summary
  1. The William Pickens papers reflect Pickens' activities as Dean of Morgan College in Baltimore, his work with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and other aspects of his multi-faceted career with correspondence being the principal series.
  2. There is extensive general correspondence, 1918-1954,in addition to correspondence pertaining to lectures Pickens delivered in various cities across the country while serving as Dean of Morgan College, Baltimore, Maryland. Selective Service correspondence contains materials relevant to his activities as a member of the Appeals Board of Draft Board #5 in New York City, 1937-1941. The collection also includes correspondence detailing his activites as Director of the Interracial Section of the Savings Bond Division of the Treasury Department. Personal family correspondence completes this series, 1946-1954.
  3. Of interest is the series pertaining to Pickens' editorials, which includes essays, editorials, manuscripts, clippings and some letters relating to his editorials. Subjects include Marcus Garvey, the Ku Klux Klan, lynching, the Scottsboro Case, his disputes with Walter White (chief of the NAACP), and his 1952 Mediterranean trip. The last two series consist of Pickens' personal financial papers followed by Morgan College fund raising campaign material which is comprised of letters, programs and leaflets pertaining to a fundraising drive which occurred while Pickens served as Dean of Morgan College, 1918-1919.
