  2. Maria Bonfanti (1847-1921), Italian ballerina, studied with Carlo Blasis and at the ballet school of Teatro alla Scala, Milan. In 1866 she made her American debut in "The Black Crook." Her career included many American and European tours, and she eventually opened a ballet school in New York. Ruth St. Denis was one of her pupils.
