Program 6 of an eight-part documentary series exploring the ramifications of dance around the world. This program focuses on the transplantation of black dance traditions from Africa to the western hemisphere, especially Brazil and the United States, and the ways in which black dance both preserved ethnic identity and encouraged cultural fusion with other groups, leading to the invention of new forms such as African-American fraternity step dancing and the Brazilian samba. Commentators include Bernice Johnson Reagon, Sheila Walker, and Joao Jorge Santos Rodrigues. The dances associated with candomblé, a Brazilian religious cult deriving from the Yoruba of West Africa, are discussed by two practitioners. Dancers Norma Miller, Frank Manning, and Ernie Smith trace the development of the lindy hop (later renamed the jitterbug), and the interaction (or lack thereof) between blacks and whites at venues such as the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Buddy Deane and dancers who appeared on his television show discuss rock 'n' roll dancing and its relation to the growing civil rights movement of the time. The increasing black influence on Brazil's Carnival is discussed by Rodrigues, Walker, and Isaura Maria Lima de Oliveira.
