Documentary on Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane and Company, told mainly in the words of Bill T. Jones, and highlighting the work Last supper at Uncle Tom's cabin/The promised land (choreography and direction, Bill T. Jones ; music, Julius Hemphill ; scenery and costumes, Huck Snyder ; lighting, Robert Wierzel). Jones discusses the work's multiple levels of meaning, and its roots in his own experience, family memories, and the history of blacks in the United States. Topics of extended discussion include the role of Eliza, which is played by five dancers, among them a man; and the use of nudity in the final section, The promised land. In a segment filmed at Jones's home, he recalls his longtime collaboration with Arnie Zane, and Zane's battle with AIDS. Members of Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane and Company appear with guest artists in rehearsal and performance excerpts.
