Summary
Documentary on the career of British choreographer Kenneth MacMillan, preceded by a eulogy by Sir Denis Forman, deputy chairman of the Royal Opera House. MacMillan candidly discusses the many difficulties he has faced, including the adverse reception of his ballets, his rivalry with Frederick Ashton, and his controversial directorship of the Royal Ballet after Ashton's retirement. Critics Clive Barnes and Clement Crisp provide opposing assessments of his work. Other commentaries are offered by Dame Ninette de Valois, founder of the Royal Ballet; ballerina Lynn Seymour, who served as MacMillan's muse for many years; Deborah MacMillan, the choreographer's wife; designer Nicholas Georgiadis; and the young dancers Alessandra Ferri and Darcey Bussell, MacMillan's most recent muses. The numerous performance excerpts include The prince of the pagodas, Romeo and Juliet, Manon, Mayerling, Danses concertantes, House of birds, The burrow, The invitation, Gloria, and Isadora. Additional ballets discussed are Somnambulism, Song of the earth, Anastasia, and Valley of shadows. MacMillan is also seen working in the studio on The prince of the pagodas with Tetsuya Kumakawa and Bussell.
