[Gail Matthews-DeNatale is listed on credits but does not appear on tape.] [Panelists]: Mike McDonald, Sherri Waterman-Hopper, Carl Farris, Virginia Farris, Phavann Chhuan, Natalie Chhuan. Representatives of three cultures talk about the role of social dancing in establishing an individual's place in a community, bringing together community members, and preserving ethnic heritage. -- The Bolivian carnival (approx. 33 min.). Recorded on July 5, 1993. Presenter: Gilka Wara Céspedes. Dance groups: members of Comité Pro Bolivia. Discussion of Bolivian carnival dances, especially those of the city of Oruro. Céspedes describes their religious symbolism, especially that of the diablada or devil dance; derivation; and the dancers' masks and costumes. Dancers in carnival attire perform the tinku, a ritual fight between two communities; caporales, the opening of which is danced by children; yotaleñas (?), named after the town of Yotala; morenada; and diablada.
