[Panelists]/dancers: Nancy Ballesteros, Maria Teresa Mojica, Melody Ballesteros, Jhonny Meneses, Rosemary Sejas, Marco Castellon, Juan Alanes. Bolivian-Americans talk about the role of dance in helping them maintain a sense of ethnic identity in the U.S. They demonstrate the carnavalito, a ritual combat dance, and the suri (ostrich) dance. -- Male and female identities in dance: Cambodian-Iroquois (approx. 43 min.). Recorded on July 2, 1993. Presenter: Frank Proschan. [Panelists]/dancers: Vuthy Kheav, Sody Tek, Rithy Sok, Sesane Ouk, Robert Shenandoah, LuAnn Jamieson, Keith Shenandoah. Four Cambodian-Americans discuss how social dancing provides a means of courtship in a culture with limited contact between the sexes. They demonstrate Cambodian dance etiquette and nonverbal communication in a ram vong (circle dance). Three Native Americans from the Iroquois nations of New York state discuss how sex roles in dance reflect their society.
