Summary
Choreographers David Rousseve and Pat Hall-Smith discuss how they draw upon their experience as African-Americans as a source for their art. They note some differences of approach that they have observed between African-American and white artists and audiences, and describe some themes they have chosen to explore in their work, such as the place of women in society, and positive and negative images of blacks. Both are seen in performance excerpts, Hall-Smith in her solo Silent echoes and with the group Ladygourd Sangoma, and Rousseve and company in Telling you my dreams from a cloud sailin' by and Colored children flyin' by.
