- Summary
- Panel discussion presented as part of Tour de Fuerza: Nuevo Latino Dance and Performance, a series of performances and workshops celebrating contemporary Latin American dance. Introduction by David White, executive director of Dance Theater Workshop. Moderator: Guillermo Gómez-Peña. Panelists: Eva Gasteazoro, Merián Soto, Viveca Vázquez, Ela Troyano, Ana Maria Simo, and others. The discussion, which is opened to the audience after brief statements by the panelists, centers on the challenges and problems facing Latino artists working in the United States. Some topics include the benefits and disadvantages of the Latino or Hispanic label, political and economic forces in the community at large that affect the Latino artist, gaining acceptance among the mainstream or the avant garde, assuming the activist role borne by many Latino artists in their native countries, increasing the participation of the Latino community both as performers and audiences, and encouraging experimental art as well as conventionally accepted Latino forms such as flamenco or salsa.
